The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 13

Amelia watched Aya pass out the invitations. The two girls have been good friends for as far as she could remember, so she was sure that one of the three remaining invitations was for her. In celebration for her sixth birthday, Aya's mother was throwing an over night party. To say that Amelia was excited would have been an understatement. The little brown haired girl had never attended a slumber party. Sure she had stayed all night at Emily's house on quite a few occasions, but this was different. This was going to be a whole night of fun with more than just one girl. Aya approached the two girls. Much to Amelia's dismay, there was only one invitation in her hand.

"I hope you'll be able to come to my slumber party." Aya said softly as she handed Emily an invitation. Emily smiled and thanked her out of good manners. Amelia turned and waited for her invitation, but none came as Aya turned and started to walk away.

"What's going on?" She asked aloud as she watched the retreating figure.

"How come she didn't ask you?" Emily wondered as she stared at her friend.

"I don't know." Fighting back her tears, she followed Aya. When she caught up, she tapped her friend on the shoulder. "Aya, why didn't you invite me to your slumber party?" Aya looked at the ground and ran her shoe through the grass.

"I wanted to Mia. I really did, but my mom didn't give me one for you."

"Why not? I'm not your friend any more?"

"I want you as a friend. I just don't know why my mom didn't give one for you." The tears began to fall from Amelia's eyes as she turned and ran from Aya.

"Uh-oh. Whiny kid at four o'clock." Duo stated and Heero turned around to face the little girl running toward him. "Where's Trowa when you need him?"

"I can handle this Duo." Heero assured and glared at his friend.

"Sure you can. . .you can push her right in Trowa's arms. Whenever you find him."

"HHHEEERRROOO!!!!" Amelia cried as she ran up to him and hugged his leg in unhappiness. The Japanese man pulled her from his leg and kneeled down.

"What's wrong Mia?" He asked softly and wiped her tears.

"Where's Trowa? I need to talk to him."

"Mia, you can talk to me."

"But I always talk to Trowa." She tried to stop crying, but more tears emerged. Heero could hear Duo snickering next to him. One quick menacing glance was enough to kill the laughter.

"Whatever it is Mia, I can help."

"It's not fair." She sobbed and buried her face into his chest, hugging him tightly.

"What's not fair?"

"Aya didn't invite me to her party. She doesn't want to be friends with me and I don't know why?" The little girl sobbed into his tee shirt and Heero looked over at the girls that were standing where Amelia had run from. He knew one as Emily, but wasn't sure which one was Aya. He knew he had heard the girl's name before, but couldn't size up which one it was.

Presently, Heero rubbed Amelia's back, trying to decide how to handle this. At first, he considered trying to make her feel better about being rejected by buying her an ice cream. . .but something told him that Trowa wouldn't agree with that. Next he deliberated coaxing her to forget about the party and the girl that was being cruel as well. . .but it wasn't something Trowa would do. Finally, he came up with a plan that Trowa would probably do. Who would have guessed that planning a battle strategy was a lot easier than handling a crying child? He pulled Amelia from him and tried to calm her.

"I really want to go to the party Heero."

"I'll go talk to Aya's mother, and find out why you weren't invited." Amelia nodded her agreement and rubbed her puffy red eyes with her little knuckles. "In exchange for doing this, I need you to smile and stop crying. . .deal?"

"Deal." The little girl forced a smile to her lips. Though she was only five, she couldn't remember a time that Heero said that he would do something, and then didn't.

"I'm impressed Heero." Duo said suddenly.

"Mia, I'm going to need something else from you. . . .I'm going to need you to tell me who Aya is so that I can find her mom."

"Mia wasn't invited because it's a mother/daughter slumber party." Trowa looked up surprised at Heero's words. He suddenly felt bad for the little girl.

"Well, you can always dress Trowa as a woman." Duo laughed. "She thinks Trowa's her mom any ways."

"Duo, shut up." Heero warned.

"I don't understand why she wouldn't allow Amelia to go." Trowa stated as he leaned against the counter. "It's not like Mirchu doesn't know."

"She claims that she wants to use the time to get to know the other mothers of Aya's friends. . .and that it would be a little awkward to have one of us take Mia."

"What about Hilde?" The Latin asked and looked over at Duo. "Do you think she would do it?"

"I'm not sure what she's doing that night."

"Then make yourself useful and go find out." Heero barked and pushed Duo toward the back door. Once the American was shoved out of the room, Mia came barging in. She dashed over to Trowa and grabbed his hand. A smile was plaguing her face as she tugged harshly on his wrist, and Trowa felt as if she was going to pull it out of place.

"Trowa, Trowa, guess what I just seen on TV?"

"What?" He asked and picked her up to save his arm.

"The circus is in town. We should go. I've never been to a circus before. Can we go? Please? Can we please go? I want to see the clowns and the acrobats, and the lions, and the elephants. They have horses you can ride and games you can play. . . .and Heero can win me a prize. Please?" She cupped her hands together in prayer stance and delivered her sad puppy dog eyes toward the Latin. Trowa looked over at Heero.

It was a fact that they had yet to take her to a circus. Mainly because there was a small possibility that whoever was looking for Amelia hadn't given up. They could, very well, be staking out the traveling troupe for the sheer fact that Trowa's sister was a part of it. Taking Amelia ran the risk of renewing their trail. They were finally living a peaceful life. Was it worth risking, just for an evening of fun.

"Not this time." Trowa said softly and the smile vanished from Mia's face.

"Why not?" Tears were forming in her eyes. "Why can't I go? Emily's parents are taking her. . .and so is Chad's and Aya's. It's not fair." She pouted and squirmed to be put down.

"Amelia, don't act like this."

"It's not fair. First I can't go to Aya's dumb old sleep over, and now I can't go to the circus. I thought you said that there was nothing wrong with being an orphan."

"There's not. Your being a orphan doesn't have anything to do with you not going to Aya's sleep over. . ."

"Yes it does. Yes it does. If I wasn't an orphan, then I would have a mommy; then I could go." Every tear that sprung from her eyes caused a pain in Heero's heart. He walked over to her and lightly took her from Trowa.

"Why don't we go do something else?" He asked softly.

"Like what?"

"We could go to Babbages."

"I don't want to go to Babbages. You can only watch that stupid mouse sing for so long Heero. It stopped being fun when I was four. I'm a big girl now, shouldn't I get to go to big girl things?. . .like circuses?"

"You're whining like a baby Mia." Heero informed and narrowed his eyes. Amelia looked down at the floor in shame.

"I really want to go."

"It was so fun." Emily announced as she held up her glow stick and twirled in a tight circle. Mia slumped onto the swing as her friend told everyone surrounding her about last night, when she went to the circus. "Not only did I ride the ponies, but I rode an elephant."

"Were you scared?" Aya asked suddenly, her big brown eyes widen at the statement.

"Not me. I got up there and asked if it could go faster. Elephants are so slow. Then, after the break, the clowns came out and did a funny thing with a potted plant." She laughed loudly and proceeded to tell everyone about the skit. "And there was this lady that throws knives at people." Emily then posed as she remembered the lady. "She must have had about a million of them. . .and there was a man standing on the other side, and he looked scared. She threw them at the man. The knives hit the board, but not the man."

"Wow." Chad's eyes widen. "I can't wait to see that. That sounds cool."

"Mia, are you going to the circus?" Aya asked and looked over at her friend.

"No. I can't go."

"Why not?" Emily asked, still posing like the knife thrower.

"I just can't."

"What else did they have?" Chad asked, obviously wanting to hear more. As Emily continued to relate the whole evening, Mia stood and headed toward the bench where Trowa was sitting and reading a book. He looked up as she approached, a bit confused.

"Why aren't you playing with your friends?"

"Because they don't want to play with me. . .they want to hear about the stupid circus that I can't go to." She climbed onto the bench next to him. "Why can't I go Trowa?" She asked, knowing that no matter what, he always answered her questions.

"You can go to the shrine circus next month, if you can prove that you deserve to."

"But I want to go to the circus now. Can't you take me and not tell Heero?"

"Amelia. Heero and I both decided on not going. It's not just him."

"What if you take me instead of buying me things?" Her eyes pleaded with her guardian, but the stern look in the green eyes was enough of an answer. "I just really want to go. Chad and Aya are going. Emily already went. Why can't I? I been good."

"You call punching boys good?"

"I been good the other times." Trowa set his book on the bench and turned to face the little girl.

"Mia, you're going to have to realize that there's going to be times when you're not going to be able to get your way. When that happens, you can't sit and mope about it. Whining isn't going to help, nor is crying."

"But I really want to go."

"I know you do, but the answer is still 'no'."

"You're being mean Trowa."
